How many people live in extreme poverty?
According to the World Bank, in 2024 10.1% of the world's population lived in extreme poverty: about 830 million people.
Extreme poverty means living on less than about 3 dollars a day (the World Bank's international line, already adjusted for the cost of living in each country). That money has to pay for everything: food, water, a roof, medicine, the children's school.
Most live in sub-Saharan Africa and in countries hit by war: poverty and conflict feed each other.
No one is poor by nature. We are all born free and equal in dignity and rights: extreme poverty is the sign that this promise has not yet been kept.
