How many migrants die on their journey?

~8,500dead and missing (2023)
~23per day, on average

According to the Missing Migrants Project of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in 2023 about 8,500 people died or went missing while trying to reach another country: about 23 a day.

They drown in the Mediterranean Sea, die of thirst in the Sahara desert or on the border between Mexico and the United States, of cold in the mountains. The central Mediterranean has for years been one of the deadliest routes in the world.

The number is an underestimate: many bodies are never found, many names are never written down.

No one risks their children's lives at sea if they can live in peace at home. Those who leave are human beings like you.
