How many children die every day in the world?
According to the UN Inter-agency Group for Child Mortality Estimation (UN IGME, with UNICEF and WHO), about 4,858,000 children died before their fifth birthday in 2024. That is about 13,300 a day: on average one every 6.5 seconds.
Most of the causes could be prevented or treated: birth complications, pneumonia, diarrhoea, malaria, malnutrition. A vaccine, clean water, an antibiotic, a midwife are enough.
The “since midnight” number above is an estimate: the yearly figure divided by the seconds in a year. These are not events recorded one by one, but the average tells the truth: while you read this page, it is happening.
Each of them was a human being, born free and equal in dignity and rights. Remembering it is the first step to refusing to accept it.
